Decorating Your Home for Spring 2016

The first day of spring is finally approaching - the perfect time to freshen up your home. Spring is all about blooming flowers and bright colors. Here are a few ways to incorporate these elements and turn your living space into a breath a fresh air:

Nature
Plantlife - From lilacs to sunflowers, there are many flowers that can make your home smell like spring. Or better yet, create a fresh display in a glass terrarium, which come in many shapes and sizes. Hang from your ceiling or place on a coffee table along with other small vases to create a true summer vibe.

Birdbath - Nothing says springtime more than a birdbath. Most people think that birdbaths are meant to be outside, but why not create a mock birdbath for inside the home as well? A birdbath filled with flowering bulbs and moss is the perfect way to create a mini garden for your living room or office.

Artwork
Chalkboard - Who doesn’t love a message board where you can customize notes and set reminders for yourself? Or how about using one as a countdown to spring and summer? Hang a chalkboard on your kitchen wall and write “Happy Spring” or “Countdown to Summer” - you’ll feel like a kid again.

Floral paint -  Create simple artwork to brighten up your walls by using floral stencils or trying by freehand! This is a simple and inexpensive way to welcome spring into your home and add a personal touch.

Color
Yellow - Adding touches of yellow in your home is like adding a hint of sunshine. Sunflowers and Canary yellow pillows can instantly brighten up your living space and is easy to swap out.

Violet - Another way you can switch up the color palette in your home is to add soft violet accents. Start with your window treatments or dining room chair cushions. You can also tie in fresh violets for a fresh springtime aroma.

Home Design Trends for 2016

Looking to redecorate your home for 2016? Spruce things up with some of the best home design trends for the New Year! Below are five interior-inspired ideas every homeowner should try:

Art Deco. Bold patterns and geometric shapes are making a huge comeback this year. Try an art deco-inspired bathroom by making a statement with your paint design or in the kitchen with gold light fixtures.

Wool Rugs. Create an outdoorsy vibe with the number one texture of the year: wool! Opt for a neutral hue for a soft accent along with bolder, more dramatic statements, like a chocolate brown upholstered chair.

Artisan Accents. Accent pieces from flea markets or your travels make for unique home decor items. Not only do they enrich your home, but they also tell stories of history and of your experiences. So visit your local antique shop or rummage through your collectable items to see how you can redecorate your space.

Pendants. Gold or colorful pendants make for elegant additions to any kitchen or dining room. Be sure to save on electricity by choosing LED lights - and don’t be afraid to mix and match with the rest of your living space. After all, mixing and matching is still a popular style for many homes!

Mixed Metallics. From copper to gold and steel, there are many types of metals you can mix together. Making a room sparkle is a trend that we’ve seen for quite some time, and it continues to be a popular choice for interior designers! One of the main reasons being that it helps to illuminate your home.

Safe Decorating Tips for the Holidays

As the holidays approach, we bet you’re thinking about how to decorate your home for the season. Although decorations can be beautiful to look at, they can also be dangerous if you’re not careful. That being said, here are a few tips to consider when arranging your home for the holidays:

Choose the right tree - First rule of buying a holiday tree is to conduct the “three-part stress test”. This means the tree should have needles that do not snap off, a truck that is sticky with resin, and strong limbs.

Set a Timer - According to the NFPA, Christmas trees are a major source of fuel in a fire. That being said, it’s important to be careful when it comes to tree lights. Be sure to turn off the lights before sleeping or when you leave the home. Better yet, set a timer to automatically control the lights so you don’t accidentally forget.

Lose the nails - For all your wall decor, including lights and wreaths, skip the nails and tacks. Instead, choose hooks and string to hold them in place.

Be strategic with candles - Keep candles away from furniture and window treatments. And if you have any plug-in lanterns, be sure to keep them on timers as well. In addition, place each burning candle at least three inches apart from each other to ensure they don’t melt each other.

Ways to Make Your Home Feel More Cozy

When the cooler weather makes you want to curl up at home, you know it’s time to prepare your home for the winter months that lie ahead. Making a quick list of ways to play with color and texture is the first step to making your home feel cozy.

Before you dive into decorating, here are a few tips to help get you started:

Add dark colors. Put away the bright decor and bring out the darker shades instead. When you play up a room with deep reds, browns, and magentas, you’re reminded that there’s no place more comfortable than your very own home!

Mix and match. Don’t be afraid to mix things up. When it comes to materials, combining leather and fleece or velvet and cashmere can set the mood for the fall and winter months and invite you to relax with a cup of hot chocolate and a good book.

Layer it up. Stow away your sheer window treatments for heavy shades (or two different types of shades). Your curtains play an important role in decorating for the changing seasons - the color, length, material - every detail counts! When the weather is cold outside, thick drapes can help to insulate your home, providing more shade to set the mood for a relaxing afternoon or evening.

Roll out more rugs. Add more rugs in your home this season. If staying warm means adding more layers, then rolling out floor runners on your wooden floor and bathroom tile is exactly what you should do. The more carpeting you add, the warmer you will feel.

How to Decorate Your Home With Autumn Colors

When the leaves start to change, you’ll find yourself wanting to add those warm, rich tones to your home. Looking for a little inspiration to cozy things up for autumn? Try these four fall colors:

Red. The color red is known for its ability to raise a room’s energy levels. This makes it a great hue for spicing up conversations in your entertainment spaces, like the living room and dining room. While you don’t necessarily want to overwhelm the room with this color, adding little touches here and there can put you in the mood for the harvest season!

Orange.
“Pumpkin” and “Butternut Orange” are perfect shades to brighten up your space. From flowers to plush accessories, there are many ways you can subtly incorporate this color into your home. And when you pair orange with neutral colors, you can really feel like you’re immersed in the heart of autumn!

Yellow.
Shades of yellow aren’t just meant for summer. In fact, you can utilize this color to add joy and excitement throughout your home during the fall too! But of course, we all know yellow can be glaring, which is why mixing it up with warmer tones is the best way to go.

Brown.
What would autumn be without neutral shades of brown? Whether it be a light or a dark color, using a combination of beige and chocolate can soften the look of a room and give it a more rustic feel - perfect for this time of year!

Easy Ways to Warm Up Your Home for Fall

While we’re sad to see summer go, we can’t help but feel excited for fall! Aside from the beautiful foliage outside, we love the idea of turning your home into a cozy space. Between warm colors and lots of layers, here are a few of our favorite ways you can change up the decor in your home this season:

Mixing Pillows. Since you and your family will be spending more time indoors soon, it’s a good idea to change the color of your couch accessories. For example, swap your bright yellow and blue pillows and throws for rich, warm hues instead. Red, brown, and orange tones (like pumpkin) are all great options to put you in the spirit!

Warming up layers. Layering your rugs not only adds extra cushion and warmth below your feet, but it also sets the tone for the fall and winter months. When it comes to creating layers, there aren’t any set rules - just add as you feel looks and feels best.

Updating shades. Sheer curtains are great for warmer months, but once fall rolls around, it’s time to bring out those thicker layers! Adding more insulated shades made from bamboo or other natural materials can warm things up a bit - especially when you choose the right color and pattern.

Switching up bedding. Stow away your throws and quilts and bring out the heavy down comforter in return. This is one way you can save money on your electric bills while staying comfortably warm this winter. However, if you love your quilt too much to toss it aside, you can fold it up and lay it across the foot of the bed just in case you need it!

Lighting. Set the tone for fall by setting up candles throughout your home. By adding candles (especially scented ones) you can create a cozy atmosphere and ease tension after a long, cold day outside.

Plantscape Your Patio

Summer isn’t over yet, which means there’s still time to plantscape your patio to perfection! If you’re looking for ways to accent your outdoor space with elements of nature, then consider the following ideas:

Set up a variety. With so many shapes and sizes available, why not create an assortment of pots? Buy some big ones, small ones, a few round ones, and maybe a rustic one too! Fill these pots with ornamental grasses and other types of plants to suit your personal style.

Add height. You don’t need a fence to create privacy and protection for your patio - all you really need are a few tall shrubs. So, strategically place these large greens around the space to protect it from wind, provide shade, and add privacy.

Give it a scent. Fill your pots with scented plants like lilies and lavender to transform your space into an outdoor oasis. These smells will touch your senses in a way that will help you relax and unwind after a busy day. Not to mention, your guests will love them as well!

Incorporate color. You can make your beautiful patio even more stunning by adding colorful details. Try using complementary colors by pairing violets and dahlias with orange or blue pillows for your lounge chairs.

Add water. Aquatic plants, such as arrowhead and water lily, can bring a sense of serenity to your outdoor space. To achieve this style, simply fill a large pot with water and place these plants inside - watch them float as you enjoy a peaceful evening in the summer air.

3 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Buying Home Decor

Want to transform your living space into a cozy oasis? If so, pillows and rugs can can really tie a room together.  However, with so many choices on the market, shopping for home accessories can be an overwhelming experience. Before you do any shopping this weekend, consider these questions below:

1. Why do you like it? Try not to get confused between what you like and what is on trend. Instead, make a clear distinction between what is popular and what suits your true, personal style. Remember that a trendy item may not fit well with your home’s decor. With that being said, don’t make the mistake of purchasing accessories you will eventually get tired of looking at.

2. Will it match what you already have?
We typically like to buy things simply because we think they look nice, but it’s important to consider how an item will work with what we already have. For example, if everything in your home follows a traditional style, then buying a geometric patterned pillow probably won’t look the best. Similarly, if you have one piece of decor in your home that you cling to, such as an oriental rug, base the rest of the room off of the style and color scheme of that rug.

3. How is the quality? It is normal to gravitate to the sale section. However, lower price tags can also indicate lower quality. Invest in accessories that are well-constructed. That way, you can rest assured knowing that it will last for years to come. Best of all, you won’t have to worry about replacing it frequently. Keep in mind, though, that this isn’t to say that everything should be expensive; rather, it means you’re better off buying a few pieces that will be worth it in the long run.

Before you purchase new decor for your home, ask yourself if you love the space you live in. Think you need a change? Or, maybe you’re looking for your first home all together! How to Get a Beach Themed Bathroom

You don’t need to live near the beach to decorate your bathroom with seashells and coral wallpaper. If you’ve thought about redesigning your space with coastal accents, summer is the ideal time to get inspired! Looking for some ideas to get you started? In an attempt to help, we’ve compiled a list of designs you can try now:

Walls. Make your bathroom design pop with gold colored coral prints on top of an aqua background. Don’t want to commit to wallpaper? Try using stencils to trace coral designs in the desired areas over a seafoam painted wall. Buying different sizes and shapes can add dimension and keep your eyes wandering around the room!

Mirrors. A framed mirror with seashells is a popular way to reflect a day by the shore. Shades of gold or ivory can add an elegant touch to your beach-inspired room. This statement piece will stand out just enough so that you don’t need to spend too much money on anything else!

Towels. A simple way you can achieve that summer look is to switch up the color of your towels. Do you prefer white walls? If yes, then go with aqua and sand colored ones to incorporate elements that resemble coastal living.

Wood. Looking for a more rustic feel? Driftwood or other types of worn wood is a creative way to get a beach themed bathroom. Adding a few green plants and a sign pointing you towards the beach will make you feel like you’re right on the boardwalk.

Blue. The color blue is a sure way to bring the beach into your bathroom. Not only does this hue represent the ocean, but it also brings a feeling of serenity to your space. To make that calming blue really pop, place a few sea-themed artifacts around your bathroom, like starfish wall art and window treatments.

5 Ways to Decorate Your Home for Summer

Summer is on the horizon! Let’s brighten our homes by adding vibrant colors and fabrics to each room. A little redecorating is all it takes. Splashes of summer hues and patterns will remind us just how uplifting this season can be. Here are a few tips to get you started:

Update old furniture.
Give an outdated chair or coffee table new life with glossy spray paint. Hues like sky blue or green bring a pop of summer color to your space. Painting old furniture with fresh colors gives them a modern edge and longer wear.

Set a colorful table.
Brighten up your home with accent dishes and patterned plates. Consider rearranging bottles and glassware on a shiny serving tray. Your next dinner party will have your guests feeling upbeat and ready for summertime!

Hang wall art.
Do you have dark colored walls? Lighten them up with colorful displays of artwork! Just a few affordable pieces (found online or in flea markets) can make a blank wall look more inviting. Play it up with the seasons by changing colors and patterns all year round.

Brighten up fabrics. Skip the neutrals this summer. Opt for bright botanical designs for an immediate uplift. If your walls are white, don’t be afraid to let other elements of your room shine. Complimentary colors like yellow and blue work well for bedding, but the options don’t stop there - find colors that suit your style!

Add fresh blooms. No home would be complete this season without freshly picked flowers. Stick with warm colors like yellow, pink, red, and orange for a cheery vibe. Place them strategically in each room to add a touch of summer throughout your home.
