Tips for Moving in Together

Are you and your sweetheart ready to take your relationship to the next level? If you’ve talked about moving in together, you’re probably wondering how you can make the transition as smooth as can be. Below are a few guidelines to consider before finding your first home together:

Redecorate Together. Have your “his and hers” trinkets, but decorate the home to make it custom to both of your tastes. If he prefers modern, but she likes the traditional feel of a home, then come to a compromise. And when the holidays arrive, share both of your favorite traditional decorations!

Divide & Conquer. When it comes to household chores, you might bicker over who does what. No need for that! Come to an understanding of who will take care of which chore and take turns to make things fair. For example, if she’s the mathematician and he’s the chef, let her take care of the bills while he cooks dinner.

Tackle Finances. Ease the tension of living together by making a list of what is financially important to you and share that list with your partner. The more you two can come to an understanding of what you are willing to give up and what you are not, the easier the transition will be.

Get Outside Together. Taking time to get out together and explore your new neighborhood is an effective tactic to help making the process of moving in together more seamless, especially when you’re new to living in the same place together. Whether you go out together for Happy Hour or plan a Friday night movie date, keep the relationship exciting by scheduling days and nights out together.

How to Pack Fast and Move Fast

Last-minute moves are common and often the most stressful, but luckily there are a few things you can do to make it easier. If you have only a few weeks to pack up and head out, here are a few tips to consider:

Start early. As soon as you sign the dotted line for your next home, start making a to-do list. It also helps to pack the items you use less often first, such as fine china, books, and photo albums.

Assign a room for packing. Choose a vacant room or one you rarely use. Label boxes to get yourself organized and keep packing tape, bubble wrap, and other materials on hand in there. Make sure to also keep a trash bag handy in the room, so you don’t have to walk back and forth across the house to throw out what you don’t need.

Be strategic. When you begin packing, mark each box with all the information you need to know to keep organized. Don’t forget to put together a box for “Day One”, which includes towels, toiletries, an extra pair of clothes, and other necessary items to make moving day easier. You can also make things simpler by labeling both sides of your boxes, that way you won’t waste time sorting through boxes to find what you need while packing and unpacking.

Pack lightly. Don’t make your move more stressful by packing too heavily. If your boxes are filled to the brim and weigh over 100 pounds, they can break the moment you lift them. So even if it means you have more boxes to carry, imagine how stressed you'd feel if you had to pack all over again.

Smart Things to Do Before You Move

Signing the bottom line of the paperwork to your new home can be one of the most exciting moments in your life, but then the reality of packing up and moving settles in. While this process can seem like a stressful one, the last thing you should do is panic. Below, we’ve put together a list of expert tips that will ease your mind and make your move more seamless:

1. Give yourself time. Be smart when it comes to packing and don’t rush the process. Instead of procrastinating, write yourself a daily list of tasks to accomplish, and do this little by little, one day at a time. The more pressed for time you are, the more stressful your move can become.

2. Skip cardboard boxes.
Believe it or not, cardboard boxes can be more pricy than sturdy boxes with attachable lids. Not to mention, cardboard is worse for the environment. With that being said, switch to a more eco-friendly option before rounding up your items.

3. Don’t pack your clothes.
That’s right! If you hire professional movers, you’ll just be wasting your time. Why? Because movers will take your clothing from their hangers and transfer them to your new closet without you having to lift a finger!

4. Take the basics first. If you live within a short driving distance to your new home, take some basic necessities with you before the moving truck arrives to deliver everything else. This includes your toiletries, pajamas, and two days worth of clothes. Packing up a few basic items will help you feel a little more comfortable amongst the chaos of organizing boxes.

5. Look for the local spots. Familiarize yourself with your new neighborhood by walking or driving around the area. This is an ideal way to get introduced to resources, such as handymen, neighbors, and even babysitters if you have little ones at home.

Benefits of Moving in Summer

Did you know summer is the most popular time of year to move? With extra hours of sunlight and more family flexibility, it’s no wonder why so many homebuyers are hunting for the perfect new home. If you haven’t already thought about moving, now is the ideal time to start planning! If you’re not convinced just yet, here are four reasons you should move in the summer:

Nicer weather. Warm, sunny temperatures will make the process of moving much more seamless. You won’t have to tread through the snow and ice with heavy boxes - no need to bundle up either. You can bet that this time of year will make the entire process more pleasant for everyone involved.

Better for the children. Make the transition easier on your kids by moving when they’re off from school for the summer. Give your children time to adjust, especially if they will be transferring to a new school. Let them make new friends over the course of the next few months and make a vacation out of it!

More daylight.  Days in the summer are longer, which means you have more time to pack up your things and move before the sun goes down. Loading and unpacking your things can take time, but if you pick up and go during longer months of the year, you’re more likely to make it a one-day trip.

Garage sale season.
Nicer weather means you can finally have that garage sale you’ve been waiting for. We all know summer is garage sale season, so whether you decide to hold our own sale or join a community sale, you’re more likely to sell those unwanted items you don’t want to take with you.

With summer vacation on the way, you might be considering a new home this season. If you’ve already talked it out with your family and you’re ready to pack your bags, why not consider Copper Square? Our Models, Design Studio & Sales Center are now open. Call today at (203)778-4800 or visit our website for more information.
