Earth Day: Green Cleaning Your Home

Today is Earth Day! If you’re on a mission to tidy up your home over the weekend, now is the perfect time to be mindful of how we can do so in a way that not only keeps things clean, but also helps give back to the environment. Here are three green cleaning methods we recommend:

Eco-Friendly Products
Did you know that household poisonings are one of the greatest threats to our health? The biggest culprit of these poisonings is your household cleaners. So look under your sink, grab all the chemical cleaners you have, and read each label. You want to avoid bleach and other dangerous chemicals. A telltale sign that these products are full of chemicals is that they will display the words poison, danger, caution, or warning. Replace these products with non-toxic cleaners or natural ingredients such as white distilled vinegar, baking soda, and lemon.

Recycling
From morning newspapers to glass, take a moment to consider all the products in your home that can be recycled. Establish a bin for plastic items and dispose of them separately from other waste products.

Donate
Once spring cleaning is complete, create a box for donations. There are many clothing, kitchen, and home decor items that could find a second life somewhere else, with someone who needs it. Drop off your donations at a local Salvation Army or Goodwill. You could also try Craigslist or drop your items off with an artist who can reuse them. Not only will your home look less cluttered, but you’ll be doing your community a favor.

Copper Square is here to make spring cleaning easier for you. While you’re busy green cleaning the home, let us take care of the rest! Our outdoor cleaning and repairing means you’ll have more time for outdoor fun. If you haven’t checked out Copper Square yet, don’t wait!

Spring Cleaning: Organizing Your Closet

If getting ready in the morning is stressing you out, then you’re probably due for spring cleaning your closet! But we know that digging into the abyss of your closet can seem daunting. That’s why we’ve answered these two crucial questions - just to take some weight off your shoulders!

How do I make cleaning up easier?
  1. Create a playlist of your favorite tunes so zone into cleaning and out of distracting background noise
  2. Looking at everything you need to clean up all at once can be overwhelming and discouraging, so divide and conquer. By that, we mean organize everything into categories and work group by group.
  3. Make three piles: keep, toss, and donate. Toss into these boxes so you can fold and organize later.
  4. If one method of organizing didn't work for you in the past, don't feel restricted by old habits. Instead, find a new way to organize. Ask friends, neighbors, or do a quick Google search - one method will stand out!
What should I empty out?
These questions can help you determine which items to keep and which to either toss away or donate:
  1. Does it fit?
  2. Have I worn it in the last 12 months?
  3. Does this currently represent my style?
  4. Is this a “staple” item?
  5. If I was shopping now, would I purchase this?
  6. Do I feel good wearing it?
  7. Will I likely ever wear it again?
Feel like your closet is still bursting at the seams? At Copper Square, we offer spacious closets to make organizing easier! The best part is that our spacious, luxurious townhomes and duplexes come at an affordable price!

Natural Cleaning Hacks That Actually Work

It’s that time of year again to get down to the nitty gritty! If spring cleaning is on your to-do list, you’re probably getting ready to buy all the cleaning essentials you typically use. But did you know that those cleaning solutions contain harsh chemicals that can damage your surfaces? Instead, here is how you can naturally clean everything in your home with all natural ingredients:

Oven
With all the cooking you do in your kitchen, try scrubbing your oven with vinegar and baking soda. This should get rid of grease marks and eliminate any foul odors.

Blinds
Clean your blinds with 50 percent vinegar and 50 percent water. Use an old sock or a clean cloth to pick up dust. Again, the vinegar will help to freshen up the smell of your blinds plus get rid of stains.

Carpets
Aside from vacuuming, remove oil stains from your carpet with baking soda. Let it sit and absorb for a little while. Then rinse from the outer edge of the stain and work your way inwards.

Tub
Use a teaspoon of liquid soap and a few drops of antibacterial oils with baking soda (good for many things) plus water. Make a paste to scrub the tub with it.

Cabinets
Skip the Pledge. Mix vegetable oil and baking soda instead and use a clean toothbrush to scrub dust and dirt away.

Top Winter Cleaning Secrets

Is cleaning at the top of your 2016 resolutions list? Keeping your home tidy for winter might seem like a drag, but when the weather is as cold as it has been, there’s no better time than now! Give your home a little sparkle and shine with these top winter cleaning secrets:

1. Clear up entryway
Start your winter cleaning at the front door! First things first, place a rough mat outside for wiping off mud and snow. And then clear away coats and shoes you don’t need to make room for your guests’ belongings.

2. Organize closets
Having cluttered closets can make your mornings chaotic, so tidy up the space by creating two separate piles: keepers and donations. It also helps to stow away summer clothes in the winter and winter clothes in the summer, so it makes finding outfits ten times easier.

3. Vacuum and rotate mattresses
Your mattress can collect a lot of dust, especially if your heat is on full blast. So take out the vacuum to suck up all the excess dust and flip your mattress upside down. By rotating it, you no longer have to sleep on a worn cushion. Don’t forget to wash your sheets at least bi-weekly as well.

4. Reorganize pantry
Got clutter in the kitchen? Empty out your pantry and recategorize. This means it helps to seperate items you use everyday from the ones you use less frequently or are expired. Then, toss away the older food and dust off the shelves. When it comes time to restock, use shelves, lazy susans, and containers to keep organized.

How To Prep Your Home For Holiday Guests

Are you hosting a holiday gathering this year? Soon enough, guests will be knocking at your door so be sure you’ve got everything you need to make your house guests feel right at home! We know you probably have a laundry list of tasks to complete before the holidays, so we’ve put together a checklist to make prepping your home easy:

1. Tidy up the bathroom - The last thing you want is for your guests to walk into a messy bathroom. That being said, dust off countertops and polish those mirrors! If your guests are staying overnight, be sure to add extra linens, toiletries, and scrub down the shower to make them feel like they’re guests at a five start hotel.

2. Clear clutter at the front door - First impressions say a lot about your home, so clear the clutter at the entryway. Not only will your home appear cleaner and larger, but it will also allow more space for your guests to hang up their coats and stack their shoes.

3. Jot down household instructions - If your friends and family are staying a while, make them feel comfortable in the home by jotting down a few essential instructions they can follow if you run out of the house for a while. For example, let them know how to work the oven, washer/dryer, and how to lock the doors or garage if necessary. Do you have pets at home? Let them know how they can help out.

4. Put a few extras near the bedside - For those who plan to stay over for the holidays, make them feel extra cozy by placing books and magazines near the bedside. Also, an extra lamp might be a bright idea if they prefer to sleep with a little more light. A tall glass of water and extra blankets will also make them feel like they’re snug in their own beds!

We hope these tips help you prepare for guests arriving next week!

Tips for an Easy Thanksgiving Clean Up

Hosting a Thanksgiving feast this year? If cleaning and cooking has you feeling anxious, take a deep breath (and then another one). Below, we’ve put together a few quick and simple cleaning tips to help you prep for the best holiday yet:

Be proactive - When you start scrambling around trying to prepare for the big meal, the kitchen can get a bit messy. It can help to go around the entire kitchen prior to cooking and remove all the clutter and stains ahead of time (especially your open and stovetop)!

Organize the fridge - Stocking the fridge around Thanksgiving can seem daunting, so toss out old produce and other foods you haven’t touched in awhile. Chances are you won’t eat it, and let’s face it - you could certainly use the extra space!

Don’t procrastinate - Cooking a Thanksgiving feast can be especially time consuming, so don’t wait until the last minute to prepare your dinner and your dessert. Work a day or two ahead to make dinner rolls or even start preparing the gravy. By the time Thursday rolls around, you’ll have more time to greet guests and focus on the more essential details!

Use disposable containers - If your family and friends are planning to bring over a dish, ask them to use disposable containers. That way, you won’t have to worry about scraping out extra dishes and you can significantly cut back on cleaning time.

How to Organize Your Closet on a Budget

Getting ready to cross "organize closet" off your fall cleaning list? Before you jump into it, learn how a few budget-friendly hacks can help you tidy up that space so you can always find what you're looking for:

Make use of shelves. You can use shelves for many of your closet items, including shirts, pants, shoes, and even an extra set of bed sheets - a great way to keep clothes from wrinkling and getting mixed up.

Hang your bags. It’s easy for large handbags to get crushed in your closet. But hanging your bags on sturdy hooks can prevent them from losing their shape. Plus, you'll always know exactly where to find them!

Buy canvas boxes. Canvas boxes are budget-friendly and can help you stow away those summer clothes during the fall and winter months. The best part? These boxes have cards you can label so you can easy spot what goes where.

Double up your hangers. Hanging all of your favorite tops on organizational hangers not only keeps them wrinkle-free but also creates a space for all those clothes you wear most often. That way, you don't have to go searching every time you want to wear it.

Part of getting your closet organized means having a place for everything. By getting creative with these budget-friendly tools you no longer need to take extra time trying to find that one misplaced item. At Copper Square, we offer luxurious townhomes and duplexes with lots of storage space to let your creativity run free! Our Models, Design Studio & Sales Center are now open. Call today at (203)778-4800 or visit our website for more information.

#TipsTuesday | How to Motivate Yourself to Clean

You like a tidy house, but can’t find the energy to clean. We know how you feel - cleaning isn’t the most exciting task. But even for those who don’t mind spending hours doing so, there are a few things you can do to make it a little more enjoyable:

Turn on some tunes. Create a playlist just for cleaning, that way you might find a little more inspiration to get up and move around. Not to mention, playing upbeat music can put you in the zone and set the pace for a quick tidy-up.

Trade tasks with a friend. Sometimes helping someone else clean is easier than cleaning for yourself. So ask a close friend to switch things up - offer to fold their laundry if they mop your kitchen floors.

Reward yourself. Rewarding yourself is often a good tactic when you need some motivation. So make a deal that you will watch your favorite TV show or treat yourself to a delicious dessert only after you tidy up what needs to be taken care of.

Try an audio book. A great story can be a good distraction. And while you might not be able to read a book while cleaning, you can certainly plug your headphones in and start an audio book. You can even turn it into a routine that you do weekly, even if that means you only get through one chapter.

Don’t put supplies away. If putting your cleaning supplies back where they came from is one extra task you’d rather avoid, then keep them out. But if having them lay around makes your head spin, you can place them on a shelf in one location rather than storing them in several different cabinets.

Are there other tips that motivate you? Let us know on our Facebook page!

#WellnessWednesday | 5 Easy Summer Cleaning Tips

Summer cleaning doesn’t mean you need to break into a sweat! There are ways to keep your townhome looking and feeling fresh without too much effort. All it takes is a little effort from your family.

Keep your home looking its best this summer with these refreshing tips

Keep clutter to a minimum. If you haven’t already done a bit of decluttering, now is the perfect time. Having lots of items lying around the house allows a place for allergens and dust to collect. If you have kids, encourage them to put dirty clothes and toys away and keep their bedrooms tidy!

Wash hands often. Make it a habit to wash hands with warm soap water to stay healthy and keep germs at bay. Viruses can affect us in the summer too, so clean household surfaces and have everyone in the family wash up. A sick house is an unhappy house and will certainly put a damper on warm summer days.

Stop dirt at the door. Protect hardwood and carpet by wiping shoes at the entryway. Ask your little ones to do so as well! Otherwise, you may bring an excess of pollen, dirt, and dust in from the outside. Consider a non slip rubber floor mat for easy summer cleaning.

Leave shower curtains open. Prevent mold and mildew in the bathroom by throwing your shower doors and curtains open after use. This will allow your walls to air dry, which will help to minimize the amount of moisture that tends to stick.

Clean up crumbs. It’s essential to clean up scraps after eating or preparing food. Grab a broom and dust or better yet, wipe down your floors. Ask your little ones to help you and make it a team effort!

The Ultimate Guide for Your Spring Cleaning Routine

Springtime and spring cleaning go hand in hand, which means if your one for tradition you're gearing up to tackle the indoor and outdoor winter mess. The one concern homeowners all share is determining where in the home they should even begin.

spring cleaning, copper square

Don't get overwhelmed. Completing just a few tasks is better than none. Turn to the Better Homes inspired checklist below, to keep you on track for this years spring cleaning routine.

Windows. Washing windows is best performed on a cloudy day since liquid cleaner will dry too quickly if the sun is strong.

Nooks & Crannies. You walk past baseboards and door frames all year long. Now is the time to check up on those unseen spaces and give them a good scrub.

Carpets. Call in the experts for a professional deep-clean and some stain removal. Not only will this improve the appearance of your home, but the indoor air quality, as well.

Under Furniture & Appliances. Lift up couches, coffee tables and chairs. There is plenty of dust and debris hiding where it can't usually be found.

Furniture & Window Treatments. Upholstery cleaners and conditioners can make leather or suede cushions look like new. It's also a good idea to vacuum curtains and draperies with the removable attachment.

Light Fixtures. Way up high is the perfect place for dust to settle. Find yourself an extendable duster to tackle hard to reach places.

Wishing for a property that requires less maintenance right about now? Take a moment to check out Copper Square. This maintenance-free living community consists of townhomes and duplexes that homeowners can purchase. You enjoy the luxury of owning your own home and let someone else take care of the yard work.
